For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, And He ponders all his paths. His own iniquities entrap the wicked man, And he is caught in the cords of his sin. He shall die for lack of instruction, And in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray. ~Proverbs 5:21-23 NKJV
Until the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, most people would never associate death as a possible consequence of sexual sin. But millions of people have died after contracting HIV/AIDS, which is transmitted either through sexual activity or other contact with an infected person’s blood. “He shall die for lack of instruction” is a sobering reminder that godly wisdom can actually save your life.
Chapter five in the book of Proverbs is all about avoiding the complicated entanglements of sexual sin. It concludes with the passage above, recapping the whole matter by reminding you that God sees and knows everything about you.
According to this passage, a wicked person falls into a trap of their own making in this regard. Sexual behavior is just that: a behavior. It’s something a person decides to do or not do.
When you are tempted to do something God wouldn’t approve of, what recourse do you have as a Christian? 1 Corinthians 10:13 provides the remedy:
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
Are you caught in the cords of your own disobedience? Or are you looking for the way out?
